Thanks Miia, I’m so glad this post helped you. I totally understand. Even though my now fiance and I live together and see each other every day, it’s still hard to spend even a few days apart. When you really care about someone, you miss them whenever you’re apart, no matter how short the time may be. But, that’s also how you know it’s worth it!

Sam, thanks for this! I know this is an old post but I had to comment especially on this one. Your blog has saved my day. Me and my boyfriend have been together for the last 3,5 years, in the beginning of the relationship we had to long distance for one semester because of jobs and studies. Then we have been travelling around the world for the last years and working in different places. Now we are forced to be apart again and this time it is only for 4 months and I know the time is very short. But at the beginning of this summer, I am absolutely lost and don’t know how can I survive this. It is like I have forgotten who I am and cannot live by myself anymore. I know this sounds all very stupid and I know that this will do really really good for both of us and will only make us stronger in the future but still there is the question of doubt..This post and other comments have helped so much and now after I found your blog I will keep reading it cause it really inspires me.

Long distance is hard, and not everyone can do it. You have to take a step back and decide whether it's worth it for you. If it is, give it your all, and if it's meant to be, it'll all work out in the end. In the meantime, if you need to vent, let me know!

I just began a long-distance relationship that I'm wary of calling a relationship because we haven't had that talk yet, despite having a million others. The day he left, I bought a plane ticket to see him at the end of the month, and then he leaves for two months in the Coast Guard before I can see – or even Skype with – him again.

I think maybe I can't do it & then I remember couples like you & Rob, or my friends Jessie & Avi, who have been together for eight years, almost all of them long distance except for the last one. And… when it's worth it, it's worth. So here goes, & thanks for the reminder!

Aww thanks! Great points you make. Commitment from both parties is totally essential. This is true of all relationships, whether they be romantic or not. Even long distance friendships require effort on both sides
