The Life’s Chocolates’ Guide to Holiday Gift Giving

by Samantha on December 9, 2009

It’s holiday gift giving time, and as someone who loves finding just the right gift for everyone on my list, I wanted to share some tips:

Give something personalized. Stationary is always easy to find, and all you need to know is the person’s name. Another option is something like an engraved bottle topper, or check out Things Remembered for tons of personalized options. One more idea: a custom photo gift, like a cosmetic bag or coin purse. Shout out to my cousins Felice & Bryan who run Bagettes! Definitely visit their site if you’re looking for a creative photo gift for family and friends.

Take advantage of gift guides online, in magazines, and on the websites of your favorite stores. In case you missed my tweet yesterday, I highly recommend Lulus.com if you’re looking for something cute, but affordable for the ladies in your life.

Don’t be afraid to give something silly or inexpensive. The Target $1 bins are a fantastic place to find fun, affordable gifts! If you choose well, the person will never know that you only spent a dollar. Perpetual Kid has a lot of goofy gifts that don’t cost much, so try there too.

Go the “easy” route. Think about the hobbies, interests and pastimes of the intended gift recipient. Do they watch certain TV shows that have merchandise? Are they a sports fan? Do they play a sport? As long as you don’t go with the same theme every holiday/birthday, it’s totally okay to get something more predictable.

Send a card. A box of cards can cost as little as $5, and a book of stamps is about $10. So, send a little holiday cheer to your friends and family the old fashioned way. Everyone loves getting mail!

Make a gift yourself! Save a little money and send a thoughtful homemade gift. Whether you make cookies, knit a scarf, bead a necklace, or put together a collage, the extra thought and effort will definitely not go unnoticed.

What are your holiday gift giving tips? How do you survive the season and still have money in your pocket?

  • Great post, and exactly what I need this holiday season as I'm having more and more trouble finding ideas. The past few years, I've tried to show people how much I care not by giving them things, but by giving them thoughts. With the things. What I mean is, by trying to show that I think of them. For example, for friends last year, I made gift baskets full of various supplies -- one friend likes to bake, so I stuck in a cookbook and baking supplies; one friend likes tea, so I stuck in a mug and some various teas...

The holidays have always been extremely special to me -- full of warmth and family and giving -- and I wanted to make it special for others as well. Two years ago, I put our home videos onto DVD for my parents and scanned and made a slideshow of our photo albums set to music; last year, I framed pictures of my grandma, my mom, and myself -- three generations -- for my mom. I joke with her now that I can figure out how much she loves the gifts by the amount of tears she sheds!

I don't think it's so much the thing, though, but what it means to you, to the person. Be it a silly Hoops and YoYo card (!) or a picture, those gifts are perfect because they come from the heart, show you they care.

Your suggestions are great, Sam, and perfect places to start looking for that thoughtful something.
  • Thanks Susan! I'm glad you liked this post! The basket idea sounds great. In fact, all of your ideas sound so thoughtful, and that's the key. You're right, it's not so much the thing, as the old saying goes, it's the thought that counts. Sure, we all love to get cool stuff, but the fact that someone thought about us and felt that we were worth the effort means so much. I always love hearing your thoughts :)
  • I'm sending out Christmas cards to a lot of online folk who have had a big impact on my life over the past year. As you have said many times before, it's SO important to take things offline and show real appreciation offline.

Speaking of - I need your address - shoot me an email :)
  • Give something personalized, i liked this phrase a lot. my favorite.
  • E-mail sent! Waiting for your reply :) And thanks for your comment, I'm sending out cards to the important people in my life. Some might say it's just a piece of paper, but it's definitely so much more.
