Kindred Spirits: Meant to Meet

Fate is a complicated concept. It’s simultaneously frightening and exhilarating to think that there are things that are bound to happen, people we are meant to meet. I’m not sure if I believe in it 100% all the time, but I do believe that there are certain situations in life in which fate plays a part. This saying sums up my beliefs in fate pretty well: “What’s meant to be will always find its way.”  The way I see it, “its way” isn’t necessarily the expected outcome, or the happiest; it just means that everything works itself out the way its supposed to eventually.

One aspect of fate that I definitely believe in is connecting with “kindred spirits” as we go through life. There are people who we are meant to cross paths with at some point. We may not realize it right away, but when we get to know them, and they us,  there’s always a moment of utter gratitude and happiness that they are a part of our lives. Think of your best friends and how you met. The story might be simple or complicated, funny or boring, but I’d bet there’s something special that brought you together, some coincidence or commonality that facilitated your meeting.

Some things are beyond our control; this is a lesson I know all too well. But, instead of letting that scare me, I’ve begun to embrace it. Even though my life isn’t quite how I imagined it would be at this point, I’m incredibly lucky to be where I am. My path has crossed with some incredible people, online and offline, and whatever force brought us together, I’d like to say thanks.

    I definitely believe in fate and that “everything happens for a reason.” I know it’s cliche, but I believe that much of what’s happened in my life happened for a reason – to make me wise up, to make me stronger, to make me believe more in myself, etc. Sometimes fate works in funny ways and we don’t always see its effects until later in life.

    I love this. It’s always a bit odd to try and figure out whether I believe in fate because so much of who we are and what we do, we make happen for ourselves. I do completely believe in kindred spirits, however. Soulmates – as my sister calls them – are such a blessing. Some of the best friends that I have, and some people that I’ve met online have enriched my life in ways I didn’t know was possible. For that, I’m eternally grateful. I believe that some people are destined to meet, and learn from one another, even if it for a short while. Those lessons and those moments are priceless.

    Have you ever read up on Carl Jung’s concept of synchronicity?

    I think Fate probably does play a role sometimes. Not every single time, maybe. For example it doesn’t always say to go three block and then turn left at the hot dog stand. It says, “You should be in Chicago.”

    Love this post! I don’t know how I feel about fate, but I can’t help thinking that my best friend and I found each other at exactly the right moments in our lives. Her parents were going through a divorce and when we became friends, my parents became a new support system for her and gave her hope that love and marriage can last. Likewise, she brought a lot of humor and warmth into my life while I was going through a difficult breakup. I’m forever grateful for her friendship and will always wonder if it was “meant to be.”

    I believe that kindred spirits, like soulmates, are those special people you hold onto, who are there for not just a reason, for a purpose, but as a blessing, a gift. And I definitely believe that you have more than one. Fate is meeting them — however you meet them — but life is what you do with that…you can see just what that person might mean to you or to keep on going.

    And if you keep going, what might you be missing out on.

    The soulmates I’ve met along the way so far kind of snuck into my life, snuck into my heart. My best friend and I still to this day can’t remember exactly when or how we became friends, though we’ve narrowed it down to spending some time together working in the writing center in college. But how did we get from that point to where we are now? It’s funny how we can’t figure out just when that change happened, but it did. The same goes for one of my other best friends, Josh, who I met online. Fate just so happened to lead us to each other, in the same writing chatroom. I think on some level we must have recognized each other because we kept talking, soon emailing, then calling. Almost fifteen years later and we’re still incredibly close.

    And the same goes for you and some others I’ve met online — people I just connect with, that I recognize as being something special to my life. Whether they feel the same, it’s up to them. But I know where I stand — forever grateful for having met them.

    You know just as well as I do that some things in life are beyond our control. Even if we can’t control what happens to us, we can control how we react to it. Fate does work in funny ways, and it puts us in situations that we will be able to look back on with a new perspective later in life. Thanks for the comment, Kate!

    Thanks Mehnaz! Seems like we’re on the same page about fate, a bit confusing to figure out. I love the way you describe kindred spirits and soulmates. To me, they’re people who make your life better in one way or another. Their impact may be small or large in the long run, but you definitely feel it. You’re one of those people for me :) I just wish you lived closer!

    That’s exactly what I’m talking about here! You probably didn’t realize it at the time, but you came into each other’s lives at the perfect time. That’s probably part of what made your friendship strong from the start. It can even be something smaller that fate does to bring people together. Like when I moved, I had gym class in the last period of the day. I bonded with a girl who disliked it as much as I did, and she’s now one of my best friends. Amazing how things work out!     I figured you would like this post, it’s right up your alley :) I think fate puts us in certain situations and it’s up to us what we do with them. We can choose, as you say, to see what a certain person might mean to us, or keep on going. When we meet our kindred spirits, we usually don’t realize how much they’re going to mean to us right away, we just get a feeling that they’re someone we should get to know. It’s kind of wacky how it happens, but I’m so glad it does. I’m forever grateful for all my kindred spirits too (you included!)

    hello …….thought i would let you know what happened to me ..had ..broke up from my partner 3 weeks after 23 years together…went to stay with my sister ………she said lets go on holiday…….i said for some reason something is tellin me to go to krakow in poland…..ok she says…goes to travel agent they say the next wek they are fully booked where we want t go..i say ok he next week then…we arrive in krakow on holiday ..we are there 2 days …come out of a nightclub and thousands of people standing in the street i tap man on the shoulder and asks can he show us another club to go to..shows us with his friend .he comes in for drinks …later he goes home he gives me his number .comes back next day .i ask his name ..same first  name as my ex and middle name …his dad same name as my dad and my exes dad and his grandad..we are still together now nearly 4 years later…he told me he never goes home the road he was tha night and he was in a club down the road from me but felt like leaving the club for somereason then i came up to him in the street h e never usually goes …we keep saying to each other wonder why we have met ?1000 miles difference 1 night and 2 people out of thousands …also he told me if i had goneto krakow the week before he would not have been there because he was scaffolding in sweden so i would never hae met him ..
    everything is for a reason …..

    Yes I will share my story.  It is just so beautiful.  38 years ago in highschool i dated my high school sweetheart.  Yes I was crazy about him but for some unknown reason we went our separate ways.   He went his way and got married.  I went my way and got married.  Throughout these 38 years I thought about him.  Often wondering what he was doing, how his life was, who he married.  Just a month ago a friend of mine called to tell me she bumped into him and he had asked how I was doing.  She told him I lost my husband in 2000, I was a widow and also had two children both teenagers.  SHe also told me he married a girl with the same name as mine and that he was divorced.  He had given his phone number to her and said to give it to me and if I felt comfortable to call him.  Well when she called me to tell me the news I was so happy to hear that she spoke with him but I ripped the phone number up and decided I wasnt gonna call.  All kinds of feelings went through me.  Days went by and all I did was think about him.  Something inside of me kept saying call him.  So after four days of pondering through these feelings I called my friend and asked if she kept the phone number.  She said yes of course I knew what you were gonna do so I kept it in my cell phone.  So I texted him “38 years”.  He texted back who is this.  Well I waited awhile before texting again hopeing he would remember that he bumped into my friend and figured out how many years it was.  He then realized who it was.  We texted back the next three days.  I had over 101 texts, more than I had in a year.  We set up a date to meet and have dinner.  At our date he gave me a bouquet of flowers and on it he wrote 4/28/12 Kindred Spirits.  I had no idea what kindred spirits meant so I came to this web site to look it up.  It has been alittle over a month and I have fallen in love with him in a way I have never fallen for any man.  I think about this man every single minute of the day.  When we are together nothing in this world matters to me except being in his arms.  I believe know we were meant to be together.  We both changed throughout the years and those changes were positive ones that have bonded us together.  It is the right time know and I feel it.  KINDRED SPIRITS

    I keep running into the same person over and over. It may be in a store, party where ever I am I have ran into this person. I really don’t know what it means but it is begun to concern me a bit.
