The Life’s Chocolates Appreciation Challenge

by Sam on May 19, 2009

Chocolate

I do all of this writing about appreciating people, and I’m not sure if my message is getting through. So, what better way to find out than with a challenge! Who can say no to a challenge, right? Especially if said challenge has prizes! That’s right, those who best complete the challenge will receive, what else, their favorite chocolate, courtesy of yours truly! Yum! Now that I’ve got your attention, I challenge all of you to show your appreciation today. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Write a blog post about someone (or several someones) who you are grateful to have in your life, and say why.
  • Tweet about specific Twitter friends and thank them for their comments, support, help, friendship etc.
  • Leave that comment you’ve been meaning to leave, and throw in a compliment about the blog design, the blogger’s writing or something else  you like about them.
  • Find someone who is new to blogging and/Twitter, and leave them some encouragment.

Non-Digital Methods of Appreciation:

  • Ask someone who usually sits alone if they want to eat lunch with you today.
  • Thank someone for holding the door for you, or say hello to the building cleaning lady or doorman who you wouldn’t normally talk to.
  • Give  your spare change to a homeless person on the sidewalk, without worrying about what they’ll use it for.
  • Thank a co-worker for their hard work, and tell them what a great job they’ve been doing.

This challenge is all about making people feel good, putting a smile on their face. It’s such an easy thing to do and there are so many ways to do it, and yet we don’t do it nearly enough. These are only suggestions, and I definitely welcome and encourage creativity in completing the challenge. I do ask that you focus on specific people instead of general groups, it’s just a little more special that way. Remember there’s no right or wrong way to do this, don’t worry that you’re not doing enough or that you may be doing too much.

Once you’ve spread the love, comment on this post to tell everyone what you did (links are welcome), and you’ll be in the running for some chocolatey goodness! You can comment as many times as you want, the more appreciation the better. Thank you for participating in this challenge, I really appreciate it, and good luck!

Great stuff Sam – you've figured out that no one can resist free stuff. I'm not a big advocate of 'link-dropping' but I will extend my appreciation of Shereen Qutob by recommending that YOUR audience here head over and show her some love on her FIRST EVER ONLINE BLOG POST. She is an outstanding writer – I think some of us who have been in this blogging game for a while now forgot what it was like when we posted our first blog for other people to see. So head over to my neck of the woods and send her some good vibes, she deserves it for putting herself out there, and answering my 'call for change' – http://www.lifewithoutpants.com/the-inconvenien…

Matt, you got it! I know how excited I was to win your contest, so I figured I'd try my own. I really enjoyed Shereen's post too, so I second your recommendation. It's great of you to show your appreciation and work so hard to get her the attention and recognition she deserves…even if you are linking to your own blog :) Thanks for taking on the challenge!

Although I'm leaving in a few days for a vacation and am short on time–I love this idea! Ah, taking a step back to thank those around you who have been there for you or just to tell them you appreciate someone can go so far.

I started digitally with a tweet: http://twitter.com/gracekboyle/statuses/1851029908 Thanking those online through Twitter that I interact with and know they care to hear the answer (visa versa, too).

Secondly, I want to give a shout out to Caitlin McCabe, who blogs at (http://www.bossygirls.blogspot.com/). Her ideas are to the point and always cutting edge. I love when she starts to write (she usually features, fun and interesting finds/music/film, etc.) I really love her writing and also enjoyed getting to know Caitlin over the course of the past few months. She's my shoutout and I appreciate her blog and who she is!

This is such a great idea Sam! I am always trying to do little things to appreciate the people in my life – and I feel like offering up a list of explicit ideas is a good way to kick start people into understanding gratitude and empathy. Through some people on twitter today I found this website: http://www.smileandmove.com/ and it has some of the same basic ideas. I thought you might like it :)

Grace, thanks for taking time out of your crazy week for appreciation! Loved the tweet, and I was honored to be included. Also, thank you for linking to Caitlin's blog. There are so many blogs out there, and the great ones don't always get the recognition they deserve. Well done :)

Morgan, I'm so happy you commented, and I'm glad you share my love of appreciation :) Thanks for linking to that website! I'd never heard of it before, but it has some great insight. A smile can go a long way.

Thank you Sam and Matt and everyone else for the support!! Truly! I am humbled :) … (sorry this is late!)

I fully agree Sam, we get too “busy” and wrapped up in our own little worlds to realize how if we just step outside ourselves just for a bit we can really be part of something great. What a great initiative and inspiration to go out and do your good for that day!

I get into debates daily about “well it's their job why should I thank them”?! Which really gets me going, it's called being “human” … apparently we don't all qualify …

    Awesome post!

Never too late, Sheereen. I've definitely gotten into the “it's their job why should I thank them” debate as well, but I don't think that should matter. We shouldn't need a reason to appreciate what someone does for us, we should want to show our gratitude. Thanks for your comments!
