Encouragement in the Form of Old, Reliable Words of Wisdom

by Sam on June 26, 2009

Wow, what a week. The past six days have been filled with so much death and sadness. I got an update from my dad on the story I wrote about earlier this week. The boy’s mother did end up passing away, and it turns out that the other driver was arrested for DWI. Then, three tragic loses in Hollywood: Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, and Michael Jackson. And, one of my best friends from college lost her father this week as well. I hope they all rest in peace, and that their families, friends, and fans can find some comfort in the happy memories they shared with those who are no longer with them. Remember, if you know someone going through a tough time, all you have to do is be there.

After a week like this, we all need a little encouragement. So, I brought out some old, reliable words of wisdom:

Bookmarks

This is a set of bookmarks that my aunt gave me a long time ago. I was probably a teenager at the time, and I had no idea how powerful these words actually were. If you can’t read them, they say:

The only way 2 live happily ever after is 2 do it one day at a time.

Success is loving what you do! (DO WHAT YOU LOVE!)

if you are too busy 2 laugh, u are too busy.

Despite the pastel colors, metallic print, and numbers in place of letters…if you think about it, these are truly words to live by.  Take life one day at a time, and make the most of every day. Do what you love if you want to achieve true success; It’s worth the risk. No matter how much you have going on in your life, good or bad, make sure you always have time to laugh every day. Have fun, live a little, don’t let yourself have any regrets.

  • Matt: You are a great example of someone who is living in the moment, and I admire you for that. Who cares if we take the path less traveled as long as we're enjoying every day and finding fulfillment in what we do. The leaps of faith that you're taking are definitely scary, but I truly believe that good things will come your way and it will all be worth it. Thanks for sharing your perspective!
  • Great post Sam. I think I am finally starting to realize what it means to 'live in the moment' and do what I love. Obviously being unemployed isn't what I love - but I'm taking leaps of faith and living up to my own potential. I'm realizing my 'worth' and living with a God Mode Mindset - stay tuned to tomorrow's post over on my blog for more explanation on that. Once you start breaking a few 'rules' and 'cheat' the system - you're able to do more and achieve more than you ever thought possible. All of these recent deaths have reminded me how short life is, and that you never know when life will be taken from you. It's a scary thought, but rather than cowering and hiding behind my fear of death, I'm out there doing everything I can to lead a fulfilling life.

  • Andhari: Yeah, hopefully one day it won't take such sadness to remind us to live our lives to the fullest. I always look forward to your insight. Thanks!
  • Maria, thanks for stopping by! Great point, reflecting on the positive is totally empowering. We just have to make the extra effort to do so.
  • Death will always give people insights like this. Sad yet such a reminder, I was so shocked when I heard MJ died.

  • Very nice post. Life is hard most day but when you reflect on all the good things life has it empowers you to keep going.

  • I love it! What a great thing to include in an auto response. It says a lot about you that you want to make sure people are encouraged, even when you're out of the office. Thanks for sharing!
  • My out-of-office message at the office ends with "Do what you love and love what you do - life is good!" If I'm not here to offer encouragement to people looking for help or questions I want to make sure my message to them is.

Great post, after the week you've had (parts of which the entire world is sharing) I think we can all use a little encouragement!
